Concerning treasure hunting, coin shooting, etc., how many times have
you heard "always recheck the hole"? You should add, believe
your scope, or at least follow through with what it tells you.
A year ago last fall, while visiting my Mother in North Central Iowa,
and not being too sure about my new Electroscope® Model 301 and
Model 20, I was practicing Scoping inside her house. (It was cold outside,
the ground was frozen and snow covered) but I kept getting this hang
up with the Scope to the west. Having searched her back yard and all
the neighbors at least three dozen times with various metal detectors,
with reasonable success I might add, finding some silver coins, Indian
Heads, and old city tokens, I pursued it no further.
We were back there again a year ago this time and the neighbor across
the alley had torn their old garage down and bull-dozed a little. I
immediately asked for permission to detect. The lady said I would have
to hurry as gravel was on its way to fill in the back yard so as to
build a new garage.
Getting my metal detector, the first thing I found was an 1884 seated
dime in top condition. Than a couple of clad coins and another silver
dime. This time it was a 1908 Barber dime in excellent condition. At
this time the gravel truck was backing in, the end of my detecting.
Back in my mother's house, I looked out to watch the truck unload and
then realized the two dimes were recovered in about the same line the
Electroscope® hung onto a year ago. Talking with the people building
the garage, they said that the old car taken out of the old garage was
loaded (just what they meant by loaded they did not say) with old coins
tucked under the seats, etc. I never even knew their was an old car
there. The area is now under 3 to 5 feet of sand with cement on top.
That is the end of experience, however I did win "Find of the
Month" with my two dimes!
